Nor is it a minivan. Yet it's more than a car. The edge handles better than the truck-based explorer while offering almost as much cargo space. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, it's easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. The edge's ride quality may be its greatest attribute. It isolates occupants from rough roads without riding like a raft. The edge is based off the same platform as the ford fusion and the mazda6, regarded as one of the best handling midsize sedans. Ford says it purposely designed the edge to deliver a slightly softer ride. The 3. 5-liter v6 engine has variable valve timing produced a good range of power at all speeds and the transmission shifted smoothly. Performance is never a problem. The torquey v-6 responds promptly and tackles inclines and twisting roads with relish. Overall, the car's dynamics are perfectly appropriate for this type of vehicle, and it's a really nice balance of ride, handling and acceleration. The edge's maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds. Even with the v6 at full song, the interior cabin remains remarkably quiet. Ford said its engineers were obsessed with reducing wind noise, to the point of tweaking exterior mirrors "by tenths of a millimeter" to conquer the wind. The cabin is roomy and pleasant for both front- and back-seat occupants, a true five-seater without anybody feeling squished. There's no third-seat option, nor is there room for one, but there is plenty of cargo space. The dashboard is well-organized. The edge is earned a coveted "top safety pick" rating from the insurance institute for highway safety. Edge held up nicely in frontal and side crash tests - no surprise with its extensive safety package of front/side/rear air bags, side-impact door beams and energy-absorbing materials.
